Background of the Study

Effective nurse-patient communication is a fundamental component of quality healthcare. It fosters trust, facilitates accurate assessment of patient needs, and enhances the nurse’s ability to provide personalized care. Communication in nursing involves verbal and non-verbal interactions, listening skills, empathy, and the ability to educate patients about their health and treatment options (George et al., 2024). In Kaduna State, where healthcare systems face challenges such as high patient loads and resource limitations, the importance of effective communication cannot be overstated.

Studies have shown that effective communication between nurses and patients can lead to improved health outcomes, such as better medication adherence, reduced anxiety, increased patient satisfaction, and faster recovery (Nelson et al., 2023). Furthermore, effective communication ensures that nurses can address patient concerns, provide adequate health education, and develop a therapeutic relationship that empowers patients. This study will explore the effect of nurse-patient communication on health outcomes in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate nurse-patient communication can lead to miscommunication, misunderstandings, and patient dissatisfaction. Poor communication in healthcare settings often results in medication errors, decreased compliance with treatment plans, and increased patient anxiety (Johnson & Adeyemi, 2024). Despite the known importance of effective communication, there is limited research in Kaduna State on how nurse-patient communication directly affects health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the role of nurse-patient communication in improving patient outcomes in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the quality of nurse-patient communication in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State.

2. To evaluate the relationship between effective nurse-patient communication and patient health outcomes in Kaduna State.

3. To identify barriers to effective communication between nurses and patients in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What is the quality of nurse-patient communication in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State?

2. How does effective nurse-patient communication impact patient health outcomes in Kaduna State?

3. What challenges do nurses face in communicating effectively with patients in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Effective nurse-patient communication leads to improved patient health outcomes in Kaduna State.

2. Poor nurse-patient communication is associated with higher rates of patient dissatisfaction and poor treatment adherence in Kaduna State.

3. Nurses with advanced communication skills achieve better health outcomes for their patients in Kaduna State.
